Notes for John Bachellor:
He was one of the jury that tried the famous witch craft cases in Salem. With the other members of the Jury, in 1692 he signed a statement asking forgiveness for the error of their judgement. " We whose names are underwritten, being in the year 1692 called to serve as jurors in court at Salem, on trial of many who were by some suspected guilty of doing acts of witchcraft upon the bodies of sundry persons, we confess that we ourselves were not capable to understand, nor able to withstand, the mysterious delusions of the powers of darkness and Prince of the air, but were, for want of knowledge in ourselves and better information from other, prevailed with to take with such evidence against the accused, as, on further consideration and better information, we justly fear was insufficient for the touching the lives of any (Deut.xvii) whereby we fear we have been instrumental, with others, though ignorantly and unwittingly, to bring upon ourselves and this people of the Lord the guilt of innocent blood; which sin the Lord saith in Scripture he would not pardon (2Kings xxiv.4) that is, we suppose, in regard to his temporal judgments. We do therefore hereby signify to all in general, and to the surviving sufferers in special, our deep sense of, and sorrow for, our errors in acting on such evidence to the condemning of any person; and do hereby declare, that we justly fear that we were sadly deluded and mistaken--for which we are much disquieted and distress in our minds, and do therefore humbly beg forgiveness, first of God, for Christ's sake, for this our error, and pray that God would impute the guilt of it to ourselves nor other, and we also pray that we may be considered candidly and aright by the living sufferers, as being then under a strong and general delusion, utterly unacquainted with, and not experienced in, matters of the nature. We do hereby ask forgiveness of you all, whom we have justly offended, and do declare, according to our present minds, we would none of us do such things again, on such grounds, for the whole world--praying you to accept of this in way of satisfaction for our offense, and that you would bless the inheritance of the Lord, and he may be entreated for the land.

Obituary from unknown news paper
RITES FOR PIONEER RESIDENT
"A pioneer of the Orchard Lake area, the owner of Wilkins Restaurant at Orchard Lake Road and Pontiac Trail, died May 16 [1968] at the age of 86. Service for Fred C. Wilkins was Saturday afternoon from Donelson-Johns Funeral Home, Pontiac, with Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Wilkins' family operated a toll gate before the turn of the century at the intersection where the restaurant and Wilkins' Corner Shopping Center now is located. He himself was employed as a boy as a groomsman on the old Skaye estate at Hammond Lake, and also at the Michigan Military Academy which around 1900 was located on the present site of St. Mary's College at Orchard Lake. Mr. Wilkins was a past commander of David L. Kimball Camp 51 of Pontiac, Spanish American War Veterans; the Orchard Lake Community Church (Presbyuterian); and Pontiac Elks Lodge 810. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Commerce Lodge 121, F & AM, and the Commerce Order of Eastern Star as well as Moslem Temple of Detroit. Surviving besides his widow, Bertha B. are one Son, Dorwin T. Wilkins of Orchard Lake; two daughters, Mrs. Elleanor Van Meter of Orchard Lake and Mrs. Lula Baldwin of Charlevois; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Another son was the late Wilfred C. Wilkins who had managed the restaurant for several years prior to his death"

West Bloomfield Historical Society Newsletter: FRED AND BERTHA WILKINS
Fred Wilkins was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1881 and died in Orchard Lake Village in 1968. His wife, Mrs. Bertha (Batchelor) [sic] Wilkins was born on Orchard Lake Road near Maple Road in 1886. She died in 1975, still living in the upstairs of the building long known as the Wilkins Restaurant.

Mr. Wilkins enlisted in the Spanish War in 1901, and was assigned to Fort Riley, Kansas in 1902. After the war in 1903, he came to the Michigan Military Academy as instructor/veterinarian. He shortly thereafter met Bertha, who worked nearby for the Summers family. They were married in 1906 and had eight children. The big attractions at Orchard Lake then were the military drills and parades at the Academy. The typical vehicles for transportation were horse-drawn buggies or wagons and the DUR electric interurbans. Then in 1909-1910 MMA sold the castles and property to St. Mary’s schools, but still the crowds came to visit the lake area. Fred became one of the earlier motorists of the area by chauffeuring for the Skae family at their farm estate which was subdivided in 1958, and was at the corner of Orchard Lake and Middlebelt Roads. It was previously known as Westwinds.

During World War I, Fred Wilkins was employed by the Oakland Motor Car Company.

In those days, the old Indian trails were becoming roads linking the settlers to their towns. One such connection was the Pontiac-Farmington-Walled Lake Junction road, today simply called Wilkins Corners.

To keep the important thoroughfare in good repair, a group of local farmers and businessmen from Pontiac erected and maintained a tollgate house on this site from around 1858 to 1920. It was removed that year, leaving the old blacksmith shop or “smithy” standing on this land. All Indian reservation lands were required to have a blacksmith shop nearby, which is probably one reason for its existence.

In 1921, Fred and Bertha Wilkins decided to risk all and start in business for themselves by renting the blacksmith shop for a garage. They moved 2 miles from their former home in West Bloomfield. They built and operated a hot dog stand next to it and the tollgate house. Out front was a pitcher pump that reportedly went dry refilling boiled over radiators. The hot dog stand proved a blessing to hungry resorters, but once fed, they then decided to camp overnight before heading back the next morning to the big city. Sometimes as many as 50 cars would “pull up” into the nearby woods and bed down for the night. That’s when Orchard Lake Village became organized through the tireless work of the countryside ladies to protect the privacy of the local residents.

Two years later, 1923, the first store was built. In 1926, the new store and restaurant-bar opened for business, followed a year later, 1927, by the gas station, which Fred leased to Standard Oil Company. In 1956 the beverage and party store south of the restaurant was built. This, according the late Dorwin “Red” Wilkins used to be a cow pasture. The restaurant was sold in 1968 to Bruce Cameron of Orchard Lake, who closed it April 1977 for six months while adding 2 additional floors, 100 more seats, and 100 more parking places. After the Rotunda Inn burned, Wilkins was Orchard Lake’s major employer. And for most of those years, there was always a “wooden” Indian out front directing travelers on their way. He was by far the best known landmark of West Bloomfield, for it was always the awe of Chief Pontiac’s Apple Place that attracted the earlier travelers from the city. And that’s why the placemats from Wilkins restaurant and cocktail lounge explained Apple Island in Beautiful Orchard Lake as “serving as the capital of a vast empire of Ottawas extending from Lake Superior to the Gulf of Mexico and from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River”.

Fred has recalled in news clippings that the early vintage autos traveled out the Grand River Plank Road and then see-sawed their way north over mud roads to the Lake, often arriving three abreast. He and his helper would take turns at the hand pump filling gas tanks until each became too exhausted to pump any more. But the big business was tires, as many older timers still recall having to buy a spare from Wilkins
